The recent passage of SUNucate legislation in Virginia and Washington, D.C. brings the number of jurisdictions that have adopted policies to remove barriers to sunscreen use in schools to 26.
In Washington, D.C., Act 23-467 mandates that a student may possess and use sunscreen at the school in which the student is currently enrolled, at school-sponsored activities and while on school-sponsored transportation without a note.
In Virginia, SB 44 was signed into law on March 31 becoming § 22.1-274.5. Under this code, any public elementary or secondary school student may possess and use unscented sunscreen without a note on a school bus, on school property or at a school-sponsored event.
